Affordable Ways to Brighten Up Your Child's Bedroom

Children grow up so quickly, and their likes and dislikes change too often to be able to accommodate all their requests for change and new things. It's neither financially viable in most cases, nor really necessary as they'll only be asking for more in a few weeks' time.

If you feel like your child's bedroom could really do with brightening up or updating but you don't have the time or money to carry out any major work, there are fortunately a few easy and affordable ways of updating the interior.

Walls

A feature that can drastically change the look and feel of a room is the colour of the walls. While young children often enjoy bright, vibrant colours, as they get older their preferences tend to change towards the more subdued tones.

Repainting a room shouldn't take too long. If you feel like repainting all four walls would be too time-consuming and expensive, consider repainting one or two in a pleasantly contrasting tone.

Alternatively, instead of opting for paint, consider investing in some stencils which could be all the room needs for a quick fix. Or, you could enrol the help of an artistic friend or acquaintance to draw a custom design on your child's wall. Make sure it's not too trend-driven so it doesn't age too soon.

Furniture

Replacing one piece of outdated furniture shouldn't break the bank, especially if you purchase the replacement from a charity shop or discount store.

Cupboards, beds and desks are all large pieces of furniture which can really affect the feel of a room. Replace one of these and you'll really feel the difference.

Alternatively, for a cheaper fix, and if all the furniture is still fully functional, opt for a lick of paint choosing a colour that goes well with the walls and soft furnishings in the room.

Accessories

Investing in a few new accessories could be all it takes to keep your little one happy for a while. Think about lamps, for example. Would replacing these make a change?

Are there any potted plants in the room? If not, these are a simple and effective means of adding a new feature.

Soft Furnishings

The curtains are often the feature which kids get bored of first. If these are brightly patterned, they can take over a room. If replacing them, choose fabric in a single, neutral colour that will last for many years.

Bed linen and just a few cushions can make a huge difference. As the bed is often the focal point of the room, changing this could change the overall feel of the bedroom.

Ensure the bed linen complements the colour of the walls and curtains. Clashing patterns are a total faux-pas.
