Be Safe When Using Portable Electric Generators

When the power goes out during storms many people reach for portable electric generators. Unfortunately the misuse of these electrical items can lead to injuries and in the worst case scenario, death. All of these things could be prevented if these machines were used in the manner in which they are meant to be used, and if the user took the time to educate themselves.

Generators are very effective if they are operated in the correct manner. The first thing a person should do is to read through the instruction manual or booklet thoroughly. If you purchase this equipment and it is missing the manual, get in touch with the manufacturer right away.

Generators are not designed to be used indoors. They are also not meant to be used in a garage that is attached to your home. This is a portable piece of equipment that is an engine with internal combustible power. It emits a harmful type of gas known as carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless. If you use this engine inside of your home, the gas can overcome you and cause health risks.

When using it, place it outside where the fumes will be able to be released in a safe manner. Exhaust fumes should not be given the opportunity to make their way into enclosed areas. Portable electric generators should be used outside, in areas that are dry, and well ventilated spaces. Keep them away from any air intakes and make sure that the apparatus is not directly exposed to snow and rain.

The electric source of power should not be attached to the wiring of your home. It can be deadly to do so. This is because when you do this, it has the potential to retreat backwards into the power source of your home. Not only could this cause injury to yourself or others, but it could also damage your electric system and utility equipment in the nearby area.

If you would like the power source to be hardwired to your dwelling, call in a licensed professional to perform the installation for you. He will install it with an approved switch that will cut off the power and will make sure that your house is not receiving power when it is in the on position.

Be careful not to overload your portable power source. It helps to know that all generators have their own power rating. They should only be used when absolutely necessary. They should be used to power a small number of appliances in your residence, as opposed to a great number of items.

The complete wattage exerted by all of the appliances should be less than the output for the electric equipment. Overloading the machine could damage the other electronics in your home and could potentially cause a fire to start in the power cord. It is important that you always put safety first.
