How to Maintain Your House

A house's value depends on how people take care of it. This is why people perform maintenance tasks to help preserve the house. Read on to know how house maintenance like water leak detection can maintain the beauty of your home.

The value of a house depends on how you take care of it. You need to look into each part of your house and make sure everything functions well. Doing maintenance tasks, such as water leak detection, could help save you from future problems. Here are some tasks you can do to preserve the house:

Clean Filters

The heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system circulates air around your house. Air filters are not visible, so most people ignore them. These filters, however, must be clean at all times. You should check them regularly to avoid clogging. This is to make sure they are functioning to their full potential.

Check for Water Leaks

Water leaks are the common cause of moulds. This increases your bill as you waste water. You must do necessary precautions to prevent these things. There are two types of water leak detection:

- Passive Leak Detection - This is a battery-operated device that produces an alarm when its moisture sensor gets wet. The alarm will tell the homeowner exactly where the water leaks are coming from. Make sure to examine the device if it is working properly. Check if the battery is still functioning to avoid problems.

- Active Leak Detection -This device works the same as passive leak detection, but the difference is it stops the water flow. It uses a moisture or flow sensor to monitor any water leak. This comes in two types: individual appliance systems and whole house system. The individual appliance system monitors leaks in a single appliance and stops water supply when it detects leaks. The whole house system, on the other hand, monitors leaks in the entire house and switches off the house's main water supply. This device uses several sensors and sends signals using a radio signal or wiring connections.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms can save your life in case of fire. This device is the most important safety tool you need in your house. Most smoke alarms function when the electricity is on, but they have battery back-ups. Replace the batteries twice or thrice a year to reduce the chances of fire. Test the buttons once a month to make sure they are working properly.

Gutters and Downspouts

You should look at your gutters and downspouts before the rainy season starts for water leak detection. This is to prevent overflow, flooding, and roof leaks. Clean your gutters and downspouts every week to remove all the unwanted objects and provide a clear passage for water to flow. Clogged gutters carry weight on the roof and might cause it to collapse.

Kitchen

The kitchen should be clean and free of dirty dishes at all times. A filthy kitchen forms bacteria, which may pass on the food you are eating or the utensils you are using. This is where you prepare meals so it should be one of the cleanest places in your house. Dirty dishes invite pests as well. Clear out the area by washing the dishes immediately after eating.
